Rotherham United have placed manager Mark Robins on gardening leave while he holds talks about the Barnsley job.
The Reds are looking for a new boss following Simon Davey's departure at the weekend and Robins did not take training at United on Thursday.
Millers chairman Tony Stewart told BBC Radio Sheffield: "At this stage Mark Robins is in discussions with Barnsley.
"We all hope at Rotherham United that Mark makes the correct decision and stays and finishes what he's started."
It is believed that Robins, 39, can be released from his contract if a specific compensation fee is paid by the approaching club.
Barnsley are currently bottom of the Championship after picking up just one point from their opening five games.
Robins took charge of Rotherham, who are second in League Two, in March 2007.
Reds director Don Rowing told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Mark is a young ambitious manager and came across very well. He ticks all the boxes.
"However we can't make a final decision until he has spoken to our owner Patrick Cryne. When that has happened I think it will be a very quick decision."

What would you guys think of his appointment?
