Cambridge United have re-signed striker Scott Rendell on loan from Peterborough United until the end of the season.

A fee has been agreed for the 22-year-old between the clubs and underwritten by the U's board of directors.

Cambridge director George Rolls told the club's website: "We're delighted to have reached an agreement with Barry Fry to have Scott back at the club.

"Hopefully he can pick up from where he left off last month and help us push for promotion."

Rendell originally signed for the U's on a free transfer from Crawley in May 2007, but moved on to Peterborough for a six figure sum in February 2008.

Having failed to make an impact at London Road, Rendell returned to the Abbey in a surprise loan deal in November.

The former Reading academy product scored five goals in seven league starts for the U's and also netted twice in December's 3-2 FA Trophy win over local rivals Histon.

An original deal to extend Rendell's loan would have seen the U's pay Peterborough a £25,000 loan fee along with a further £25,000 relating to promotion to from the Blue Square Premier and all of the player's wages for the duration of the loan.

However, with the U's board having pulled the plug on that move, the two clubs were forced to agree new, lower terms after Rendell made it clear he was keen on a return to the Abbey.

"It's a bit different from the original deal, but obviously I can't go into all the financial bits and pieces," club secretary Wayne Purser told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"We've done a deal with Barry Fry and there are some savings on the original deal."

Purser revealed that the club's directors are funding the move out of their own pockets in order to avoid burdening the U's with any extra debt.

He also confirmed that Rendell will be available for the Blue Square Premier play-offs should the U's finish in the top five.

"The Conference have a ruling which states that should a club reach the play-offs the registration will extend automatically," he said.

"So hopefully Rendell will still be here on the 17th May, walking out at Wembley."

Director George Rolls had warned U's fans not to expect much transfer activity in the January window, but with boss Gary Brabin pleading for more resources following Wednesday's 5-0 FA Trophy defeat to Crawley, the situation appears to have changed.

Nevertheless, following the arrival of Rendell and Daryl McMahon - on a free transfer from Stevenage - Purser says he does not expect any more new signings before the end of the season.

"To get any more players in than Scott and Daryl would be a big surprise," he said.

Rendell has been registered in time to return to action with the U's at Wrexham on Thursday.
