| Austria coach Karel Bruckner is likely to lose his job if the team doesn't win its next match against Romania on April 1, the designated new president of the Austrian football federation said Friday.
Austria has only a theoretical chance left of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and is without a win in its last five matches after losing 2-0 to Sweden in a friendly Wednesday.
"I've said before the Sweden game, it all comes down to the next two matches. And that's the way it's going to be,'' Leo Windtner said in an interview with national broadcaster ORF.
Windtner will be formally installed later this month as successor of Friedrich Stickler, who quit late last year.
Bruckner, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the year, denied to comment on Windtner's statements.
"I'll discuss these matters with the (federation) only,'' Bruckner said.
Bruckner, who previously coached Czech Republic, took over from Josef Hickersberger after co-host Austria was eliminated in the group stage at last year's European Championship.
Bruckner led Austria to a surprise 3-1 win over France in its opening World Cup qualifying match in September, but the team then lost to both Lithuania and Serbia and drew with the Faeroe Islands in Group 7. Full Article | |
